What the New 24% Cannabis Tax Means — and Why You Won’t Pay It
Michigan recently introduced a new 24% wholesale tax on adult-use cannabis, effective January 1, 2026. We want to be very clear about what that means for you.
Higher Love customers will not pay this tax.
We’ve made the decision to absorb it ourselves—so you don’t see higher prices at checkout.
What Is the 24% Cannabis Tax?
This new tax applies at the wholesale level, before products ever reach store shelves. It impacts the cost retailers pay to source cannabis—but it is not a retail tax charged directly to customers.
Who Pays It?
By law, the tax is imposed on wholesalers, but those costs are often passed on to retailers—and ultimately customers.
That’s where Higher Love is doing things differently.
What This Means for You
You won’t see this tax reflected in your purchase.
We’ve worked diligently to protect our customers by:
-
Restocking strategically ahead of the tax
-
Working closely with our vendor partners
-
Absorbing the additional cost internally
What Taxes Still Apply?
At checkout, customers will still pay the existing:
-
10% adult-use excise tax
-
6% Michigan sales tax
No additional charges related to the new 24% wholesale tax will be passed on to you.
Our Commitment
Higher Love was built on putting customers first. We believe access shouldn’t become more expensive because of behind-the-scenes tax changes—and we’re committed to doing our part to keep prices stable.
The bottom line:
Michigan added a 24% wholesale cannabis tax.
You won’t pay it. We will.
